Police-involved shooting outside Schererville Dick’s Sporting Goods

One man is hospitalized and two others are in custody after an attempted robbery at a sporting goods store, which resulted in a Schererville officer shooting one of the suspects Saturday afternoon.

At 4:30 p.m., Schererville Police were called to the Shops on Main Shopping Center for a robbery in Dick’s Sporting Goods, 101 Indianapolis Blvd., Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. said Saturday evening. As they arrived, three suspects were attempting to flee the scene by vehicle and rammed into a Schererville Police car, Martinez said.

Officers then fired at the vehicle as a result, hitting one of the suspects, Martinez said.

The wounded man was taken to an area hospital in unknown condition, while the other two suspects were taken into custody, Martinez said. No one else — civilian nor law enforcement — was wounded.

Schererville Police Chief Pete Sormaz didn’t return calls for comment Saturday night.

Martinez said his department will handle the shooting investigation and that no other information will be released at this time.
