Jose Mourinho’s made-up award for Scott McTominay forced Manchester United to give midfielder CANDLESTICK HOLDER as trophy, talkSPORT host Andy Goldstein recalls

Jose Mourinho’s decision to invent his own award to present to Scott McTominay was so last-minute, the ‘trophy’ presented to the Manchester United midfielder is actually a candlestick holder.

David de Gea was the recipient of the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in 2018 but the end of the evening saw McTominay receive his own special prize.

It was a nice touch from Mourinho, who was widely praised for giving the then 21-year-old extra recognition.

However, what may not be known is how off-the-cuff Mourinho’s decision was.

talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein, who worked for MUTV on the night of the awards, reveals it only became apparent the Portuguese would present it halfway through the evening.

Goldstein said on Drive: “When I was doing the Man United Player of the Year awards for MUTV, and he was manager, we were doing the live show in a studio next to the awards.

“You’ve got the bog-standard awards like the Matt Busby Award, Player of the Year but we got wind of the fact on the night that Jose wanted to make up his own award and give an award out.

“I don’t mean in the afternoon of the awards ceremony, I mean during the evening. The evening started at 8pm, and at about 9:30pm we got wind of the fact that Jose wanted to give out an award. Maybe it was earlier but it was halfway through the night.

“It was the Jose Mourinho Player of the Season Award, which Scott McTominay won.

“But with an award, you need a trophy. So they ended up giving Scott McTominay a candlestick holder. It was long, silver and had a little bend in it – that was all they could find.

“I don’t know if Scott McTominay knows he won a candlestick holder.”

Mourinho lost his job at the Old Trafford helm in December 2018. Many may believe it’s a bad reflection on Man United that one of the managerial greats was dismissed, but Goldstein believes it was the right decision.

Goldstein said: “He doesn’t bring any happiness to any club, no players want to play for him. I wouldn’t want him near my club.

“Spurs and Chelsea fans have seen it, he brings a black cloud to the club. I’m not just talking about the players – I’m talking about the tea lady, the people in production of the TV station, everyone. I’m talking from first-hand experience.”

“I couldn’t handle that again, it was horrible. He was horrible to me, it was just Jose being Jose.”

Goldstein added: “I was never a fan of the way he conducted himself… you have to call him a legend of the game and respect what he’s done though.”
