Health minister Eluned Morgan gets driving ban for speeding in North Wales

Wales’ health minister has been handed a six-month driving ban for speeding in North Wales. Eluned Morgan has apologised after going over the 30mph limit on a road in Wrexham last June.

She received the disqualification for accumulating too many points on her licence. The Labour MS for Mid and West Wales was dealt with at Mold Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (March 16), reports WalesOnline.

In a statement, Baroness Morgan said she had pleaded guilty to the speeding charge and she accepted the court’s punishment. “This is not something I am proud of and I apologise unreservedly,” she said.

Baroness Morgan was appointed health and social services minister after last May’s Senedd election, succeeding Vaughan Gething. The role has raised her profile during the Covid pandemic as she regularly hosts media briefings on behalf of the Welsh Government.

Previously a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 1994 to 2009, she has been a Member of the Senedd (MS) since 2016. Prior to her appointment as health minister, she served as minister for international relations and the Welsh language for two-and-a-half years.

The minister is also a member of the House of Lords, with the formal title Baroness Morgan of Ely. In this role, she was responsible for leading Labour in the Lords on the EU Referendum Bill.
